* The templates are optimized for screen-readers at present, and are only meant to be a complimentary object. In addition, the files themselves are actually blurry and aren't rendered in high-enough definition. If and when I get FTP access, I can setup a better system than the current one, but the most important point; please don't edit live production templates without using a sandbox. == Program Listing? ==

Question for you: As a rookie to CC, I find it really hard to track down APIs or Programs in the forums for such. Sites like Turtlescripts have spawned trying to be a better browseable index of programs.

Would it make sense to have a Program Catalog on the site? I was thinking relatively lightweight, a table with the name, author, summary, current supported version, and a link to the Programs forum thread for it. Possibly have different sections for the major groupings, such as API, OS, Turtles, etc. I can do a mock-up version of what I'm describing if I'm describing poorly. Having posted a couple programs (and more to come), I'd have no issue creating a forum thread, then adding it to a Wiki page. I'd prefer the visibility.
When I searched for an API, which in my case was Term, most people would be looking for the API. However there isn't a redirect page. In fact there aren't any redirect pages for the APIs. Why is this? When I tried to create it I was greeted with the message saying you deleted it for the reason "Omnomnom redirect pages!"

So there were redirect pages? Why remove them? They're very useful and help you find what you're looking for.
desc=This tutorial is for those who are just getting started with ComputerCraft.
objective=To gain a basic understanding of programming in ComputerCraft.
}}

Creating the Program
Creating a Hello World program is a simple task and does not require much knowledge in Lua or ComputerCraft.
The first step is to create the program so we can edit it. Access your computer (does not matther if advanced or not) and type:
edit helloworld

You will now have a blank program that you can edit.

We can make the computer print "Hello World!" in three different ways.

To print it letter by letter, type:
textutils.slowPrint("Hello World!")
Please don't overuse slowprint as it can annoy some users.

To just print it, type:
print("Hello World!")

You can also use:
write("Hello World!\n")
Using \n will make the console go to the next line. (print does this automatically!)

Now, press CTRL and make sure Save is selected, then press ENTER or RETURN.
The program is now completed and saved, so let's exit edit mode.
Press CTRL and select Exit by using the arrow keys. Once selected press ENTER or RETURN.

To test it, type:
helloworld

Simple isn't it?

* Any chance to get some of the links to the vanilla Minecraft items to link to their page on the Minecraft Wiki? That's where a majority of the missing pages point towards. I think it's part of the above mentioned issue with the links via recipe or thumbnail images. Of course, we could always create a page for all of them, and redirect to the Minecraft Wiki, but that seems stupid to have to do.
** This is something that needs to be changed, however, it would require a heavy modification to how the crafting template works. Maybe redirecting the pages would work, but it's not ideal. Oeed 08:37, 25 March 2014 (GMT)
* Would it be possible to get lua syntax highlighting for tutorials and program code? I noticed that Wikipedia has syntax highlighting for lua, which they can do using: <tt><syntaxhighlight lang="lua"> </syntaxhighlight></tt> tags.
Prerequisite: Installing the mods
It is very important to read everything carefully before asking questions.
Also, the latest version of this mod may not be compatible with the current Minecraft release.

# Install Minecraft Forge Recommended Build
# Download the latest version of ComputerCraft
# Copy the .zip file into *minecraft folder*\mods\ or into your specified profile. (Tip: If on Windows, on the main screen of Minecraft, go to 'Texture Packs' and click on 'Open texture pack folder'. Go up one folder, there's your Minecraft folder. If on Mac, open Finder, hit Command+Shift+G and type ~/Library/ then hit enter, open 'Application Support' then open 'minecraft')
<!-- Both the zip or folder work. Please do not edit this without proof.
Aha, but the folder doesn't work anymore since 1.6 -->
Crafting
<br />
{{Crafting grid
<br />

Right click on the computer to use it.<br />
Some important key combinations to remember:
style="background:#EEE" width="200px"|Key Combination
style="background:#EEE" width="*"|Usage
+
Closes the current program.
+
Reboots the computer.
+
Forcefully shuts down the computer.
You usually will have to hold down the key combinations for at least 1 second<br />

Attaching hardware
You can a bunch of stuff to your computer. There are 6 sides to the sides of your computer, and the computer can interact with almost anything there that it can interact with. This includes modems (API), disk drives (API), Printers (API), monitors (API), and even redstone (API)! Connect these to the sides of your computer and use the appropriate API to control your hardware.

Using the computer 's shell
Your computer should come with CraftOS as long as you didn't mod the mod.
If you have ever used the Linux terminal or Command Prompt or DOS or something similar, shell usage should be pretty simple.

However the CraftOS Shell is even simpler and it only has one thing you can do: Type the name of a program (along with arguments) and it will run.

A few useful programs that will help you magically appear on every computer you use, because they are in the universal rom folder that every computer can access.
cd
Changes the current working directory of the shell, so you can do something else.
ls
Lists the contents of the working directory, with directories in green and files in white.
rm
Removes (deletes) a file or folder
mkdir
Makes an empty directory
mv
Moves a file to another path
cp
Copies a file under another name

Programming your computer
For programming tutorials, go to: Tutorials

Programming ComputerCraft computers is done with a programming language called Lua. Lua is intended to be pretty simple to use, but if you don't know how, you can check out the programming tutorials on this wiki.

----
Do you recall that one time ages ago when you looked up "how to play Minecraft", and you got a basic guide: punch trees, make bench, make tools, build house, make torches. But do you remember the end?

The rest is up to you...

ComputerCraft works the same way. The goals and uses for ComputerCraft are limitless, and now you've gotten started. There is no definite thing to do next, the rest is up to you.
